Workholding Jaws for OneWay, Talon and Stronghold Chucks

OneWay offer a unique series of jaws known as Premium Profile Jaws.  These are offered as an alternative to the serrated jaw design employed in the standard OneWay jaws.  There are advantages to both types of jaws.  As mentioned elsewhere on this site, dovetail jaws are intended for use at their design, or nominal, diameter regardless of the amount of jaw movement permitted by the chuck design.  This is the situation depicted in Figure1  in the accompanying diagram which shows the profiled design on the left and a conventional design on the right.  In this situation both the profile jaws and the serrated jaws grip equally well, with the serrated jaws having the advantage of causing less damaged to the wood in the grip area.  However, as soon as you grip something which is not at the design diameter (see figure2), the profile jaws grip much better as they are holding over a greater grip area.  In this situation, the serrated jaws contact only a small area - which reduces as the timber diameter increases - and causes significantly increased damage to the timber.  Premium Profile jaws also give the turner the flexibility of gripping square stock (see figure3), which is not recommended when using serrated jaws.

The diagram, right, illustrates the meaning of the terms "External" and "Internal" grip as applied to chuck jaws.

The following tables show the reference numbers, for ordering, and the principal operating dimensions of the jaws sets available for the Oneway, Talon and Stronghold chucks, respectively.
